Fine 16th 17th century Dutch Old Master Portrait of a Gentleman, oil on panel. We are delighted to offer a very fine and important early portrait of a gentleman / physician, three quarter length, dressed in black with a white collar and a skull on a draped table. In his right hand is a feather quill and gloves in the other. The style and overall treatment point to the likely date of manufacture being late 16th /early 17th century. The origin most likely Anglo-Dutch; it has an English court-painter style (this type of portrait was popular with the courts). The subject is similar to Memento Mori but possibly depicts a physician (see Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682) who was an English Renaissance author and physician. His writings range from medicine, geography, philosophy, and Christian spirituality).
The artist’s mastery of the oil technique is clearly evident, particularly for the very early period. This panel is from the close circle of Dutch Golden Age master Hendrick Gerritsz. Pot (1585-1657) - Pot’s own hand is very plausible. On the reverse of the panel \"KK\" has been stamped as the ‘maker’s mark’ indicating quality. Law dictated that panel makers belong to a guild which set out strict quality standards for panel making. Further research could reveal the particular maker.
The condition is good and the paint sound/stable, an old age craquelure. Ready to hang in its wood frame (walnut?).
