Late 19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch applique quilt Delaware Documentation GC
This quilt is a beauty with it\'s unusual Pennsylvania Dutch Pattern. The quilt had been part of a large private textile collection in York, PA until we purchased it 2013. It was one of over 30 quilt & coverlets being sold at an estate sale. Overall the quilt is in very good condition and has been well cared for, however the overdyed green printed fabric has started to show areas of wear with the fabric shredding and tearing. Unfortuntaly this was typical of many of the greens used from 1875 to 1900. The quilt looks fine as is and from a collectors viewpoint it would be best to leave as is, unless replaced by similiar fabric of that time period. We do have an old Pennsylvania Dutch cutter quilt that would be a good choice if someone is interested in restoring. Please contact us for further infomation on the cutter. This quilt was registrared with the Delaware Quilt Project in 2006 at Dover as part of the Unversity of Delaware Textile & Cultural Program, there is a label attached on the reverse side. The quilter filled every area with the central appliques with floral motifs in each corner of the blocks. Beautiful feather quilting used in between the large blocks. Large bordors that are also heavily quilted, there is some yellowing and discoloration mostly on the borders, this does not distract from the beauty and workmanship of the quilt. Please review the photo\'s to make your own determination on value and condition. The beautiful quilt is been loving made and gently used and displayed.

Please remember that vintage & antique textiles are older and may not perfect, their wear tells the story of time and makes them interesting - just like people. The following is a very broad overview of quilt classifications. Antique and Vintage Quilts have both a functional and social significance, they were made from a variety of materials, from elaborate fabrics to scraps of old clothing and sometimes old feedsacks. Groups of women often gathered to create quilts together, and the finished result was sometimes given as a gift for a special occasion (like a wedding) or as a symbol of friendship. Quilts can also document a family’s history as the pieces sewn together can come from baby blankets, old clothes, etc. Antique & Vintage quilts are typically categorized by style (broad classification) and pattern (of the individual blocks). Some notable styles include central motif, log cabin, album, circular, star, patriotic, thematic, representational, whole-cloth, charm, utility, signature, medallion, redwork, applique small block, applique 4-block, striped, Colonial Revival, Amish and crazy quilts, among others.

To our valued customers,

The mission of Quilts & More is to promote & educate consumers on the value of keeping American made antique and vintage quilts & textiles in our current day economy over quilts made outside the US using mass production, cheaper materials and vastly cheaper labor. This country has so many beautiful & historical quilts made by our ancestors. Many times quilting was the only artistic and social outlet for these talented ladies. Quilting was such a big part of their lives and culture most all antique quilts before WWII have a very high level of expertise. However we did see a drop in that expertise after the war, as women went out to the work force and did not learn the craft like their mothers. We can help to improve our current day economy & honor our ancestors by purchasing and re-purposing their beautiful works of art.

Choosing Antiques & Vintage textiles is a great way to be green & help our economy. It also helps to cut down profits from large corporations who now outsource their labor for very small wages in other countries. Most quilts made today are done so outside of the US using very cheap labor & materials. We offer high quality quilts & other textiles at the best prices possible for us to stay in business. Patricia Quilts and More also uses recycled packaging for shipping to keep costs down. All quilts and other textile merchandise are stored in a smoke free, climate controlled Environment. Thank you for trusting us with your business over the years.
