We know much about the history of Jews in the various performing arts. But aside from Harry Houdini, Sigmund Breitbart and a few others, we know little about Jews who performed in the circus over the years. Joseph Herman was among the most interesting in that his career lasted from the early 1900’s into the 1960’s. In the early 1900’s, Herman performed as a “Jewish Character Clown” which was based on the ethnic stereotypes of the period. As the years moved on, he abandoned this type of image. Herman performed with the famed “Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus” and in later years with the “Mills Bros Circus” and others. It must be said, that Joseph Herman was an important landmark figure for any number of reasons. Therefore this early photograph of him is quite valuable historically. It is a solid piece with normal expected age wear (some lightness of image). The photo had been removed from an old album and the back of the picture still has the black paper attached from the album. The inscription is in the negative.
