This is an exquisite pastel of a tiger head. When you look at it you could swear it is a photo that has been softened by filters. I spoke to the artist, Lesley Harrison, recently and she recalled that she had done it in about 1980 and that it would have been sold through the New Masters Gallery in Carmel, California, for about $300 at that time. She reckoned it would be worth “thousands” today in her gallery. This is an original artwork, not a print, and is signed Lesley H. without a date. Pastel is a dry pigment with no oil or acrylic and is extremely durable over hundreds of years. The colors are so vibrant that they are often mistaken for oils.
Lesley Harrison is a self-taught artist from Sacramento. She later moved to Arizona and is renowned for her equine art as well as wildlife pastels, posters and prints. She received the People’s Choice Award from the Kentucky Derby Museum for her art.
This pastel in its frame measures 30” wide x 24 ½” high. The image area measures 23” wide x 16 ½” high.
