Ownership copy of Lilian Snelling

Lovely art nouveau styled binding

Neatly written name in the book dated 1912 states \'Lilian Snelling\'. I believe that this may be the ownership copy of the botanical artist, Lilian Snelling (1879 -1972) who is considered to be \'one of the greatest botanical artists of all time\'. She was appointed MBE in 1954 and awarded the Victoria Medal in 1955. In 2007, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh had a ten week long exhibition of her work. There is a small tracing on one tissue guard, which when I originally wrote up the listing thought it was a bit of student work/annotation and thought I would do a bit of research on the ownership name . I have no other back up information for the \'Lilian Snelling\' written in the book other than the dates fit when the book was dated and from a cursory use of census information, none of the other \'Lilian Snelling\' names seem a good fit. It will need further research I think.

The book is complete and no pages are missing but this is a worn,well used copy. Design on front board is still reasonably bright although it is rubbed.Boards are worn especially spine which has a small section missing through fraying on spine edge and small tears on spine ends. Rear board has some staining and a small split on lower edge of spine.Hinges are cracked (the rear badly so) and rear board feels slack.Tear in middle of page on back endpapers. Neatly written name \'Lilian Snelling\' and date on half title page.Profuselyillustrated with 7 colour plates and small black and white illustrations throughout. Some neatly student annotation on one page with a pencil tracing of insects on a tissue guard and noted some pages have a creased over corner.
