Hot Topic is known for pop culture-themed fashion,but recently it announced a collection that is
trying to elegantlycombine thetwo. The company has partnered with Disney to create a dark,
limited-editionfashion collection inspiredby the feature film Maleficent.
“We instantly loved Maleficent. Its dark andmysterious storyline and the amazing costumes seemed
likethe perfectinspiration to create the kind of fashion line our customers particularlylike,”
Cindy Levitt,Hot Topic’s SVPof merchandising and marketing, told theDaily Dot.
The collection was revealed recently at DisneyStudios in Los Angeles. Unlike their other pop
culture apparel,the collectionis not too obviously based on the film and avoids plastering imagery on
itspieces. Instead itsblack silhouettes and details elegantly recall themysterious charm of the
classic Disney villain.
The pieces seem to follow the growing trend in popculture fashion to go beyond images on
t-shirts ordresses, and instead deliversomething chic.
“We’ve believed for some time that there’s anopportunity to elevate ‘pop culture fashion’ beyond
a t-shirt,”Levitt said.
