FINE 19TH CENTURY OIL PAINTING BY AUSTRIAN ARTIST KARL KAUFMANN (1843 - 1901). Painting is in Excellent Condition, oil on wooden panel measuring 14 1/2\" by 22 3/4\". Frame shows some wear and measures 18\" by 26\". Wonderful image of the forest pond surrounded by trees with a lone figure in the distance. Signed \"B. Lambert\"; titled on verso & numbered 715Kaufmann was a prolific painter during his lifetime and worked under contract for many galleries. His works are found with a multitude of \"pen name\" signatures including \"B. Lambert\" which the artist used in order to circumvent the various exclusivity rights that each of the galleries expected. By using this method Kaufmann was able to paint for many clients at the same time.Famous Austrian landscape and architecture painter Karl Kaufmann (1843-1905). He studied at Vienna Academy and was active in Vienna in the 1900s. This painting was signed by the artist with Kaufmann\'s famous pseudonym \"B. Lambert\" , which was one of several pseudonyms adopted by artist Karl Kaufmann to circumvent the exclusionary contracts many 19th c. art dealers and galleries compelled their artists to sign. It was not unusual for popular artists to have contracts at various galleries under different names; this enabled them to offer their works in different venues without breaking any legally binding contractual agreements. They were thus afforded the opportunity for more sales.Karl Kaufmann, a painter of landscapes, seascapes, urban, architectural and Oriental scenes, was born in Neuplachavitz, Austria in 1843. His specialty was Oriental village scenes and scenes of Venice. In certain instances, his village scenes depicted imaginary views of the Orient. He is known to have used pseudonyms, including Carnier Henri, Marchand Charles and B. Lambert. The artist died in 1901 in Vienna.
