WILTON ROBERT LOCKWOOD (American, 1861-1914) SHIP WRECK IN MARSH. Fine oil on board scene shows low grassland with water having the remnants of a large wood boat. Cloud strewn sky with low trees in distance. Very good condition. Signed lower left . Housed in its original gilt molded wood frame with front glass. Doll & Richards Boston label to reverse. Old pencil gift card taped to back. Frame measures 17\" by 23\" with an opening of 12\" by 17 1/2\".Born 1861 Wilton, Connecticut - Died 1914 Brookline, Massachusetts. Artist, Wilton Lockwood, was also a successful painter of portraits and floral still life with much attention to decorative pattern. He was born with the name of Robert Wilton Lockwood, which was derived from Wilton, Connecticut, his place of birth. His mother died when he was four years old, and he was raised by relatives in Connecticut. By the early 1880s he was in New York City, working as an assistant glass painter and etcher in the atelier of John La Farge.In 1886, Lockwood went to Paris, and stayed there for the next ten years. He studied at the Academie Julian under Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant, and also spent time in Munich with Frank Duveneck. Art Associations:Copley Society of Artists, Boston
