Impressivelytall, incredibly thin, impossibly graceful, she is called a shepherdess bysome, but what she really looks like is a novitiate from a local convent, goneto market to buy -- or sell -- a basket of crusty loaves. At her feet, a tiny puppy begs – for a bit ofbread or simply a friendly pat from the object of his adoration.

A Spanish company called Lladro has specialized incapturing these sentimental moments since it was founded in 1953 by threebrothers: Juan, José and Vicente Lladró. They madetheir first creations in a Moorish furnace built in their own home in Almàssera(Valencia), Spain. The brothers experimented with porcelain in-between runningtheir family’s tile and crockery factory.

In 1958Juan, José and Vicente decided to dedicate themselves exclusively totheir own works and transferred their small company to a warehouse in theneighboring town of Tavernes Blanques, because the family workshop had becometoo small for their business.

Theirworks grew in popularity and by the time our shepherdess was designed by JulioFernandez and brought into production in 1970, they were acknowledged leadersin the world of fine porcelain.

Webought our Shepherdess at an estate sale in my neighborhood. She stands 10¾” talland is approximately 5¼” wide. She has had a single owner who treasured allher Lladro and left them in pristine condition. There’s not a chip, crack, orany other damage.

Unfortunately,that love did not include keeping the boxes. She bought Lladro for the joy shetook in its beauty and artistry, not as an investment for resale.

It iseasy to learn that the book value of “Shepherdess with Dog” is $240. We feelthat our fixed price of $95 is more than fair. If you don’t agree, tell us why– or make us an offer. We just might accept it.
