Lot of 2, Estados Unidos MexicanosBrilliant Un-circulated Year 2000 Mexican Silver Libertad, 1 Troy Oz Mexico Round Bullion Coins.One of the most beautiful Silver coins in the world, the 1 oz Silver Mexican Libertad is .999 fine Silver.
The obverse of the coin features the winged Victoria (who sits atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City) in front of two volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuti representing the tragic legendary love story of an ancient princess and a warrior.
The reverse side of the coin is stamped with the coat of arms of Mexico, which depicts a golden eagle perched on a pear cactus while holding a snake in its mouth. This image had strong religious connotations for the people of Tenochtitlan, but more recently it has come to symbolize the triumph of good over evil.
The winged Victoria refers to the Roman goddess of victory who was historically worshiped by triumphant generals returning from war. The Mexican Independence Victory Column that supports the winged Victoria statue is a giant column in the middle of Mexico City built in 1910 to commemorate Mexico’s War of Independence.
