These 16 lead soldiers are all representative of the 39th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War. Because the majority of its members were Italian-Americans, they were known as the Garabaldi Regiment. Garabaldi is reputed to have been offered by Lincoln, the command of the Army of thePotomac when he visited from Italy where he was a famous and accomplished General. The 39th New York fought at the First Battle of Bull Run, Gettysburg, the Battle of Bristoe Station, the Wilderness, the siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Deep Bottom.
