Pair of Louis XIV Style Bronze Urns after Claude Ballin .
After the originals of 1665 at Versailles, France.
Very nice condition.
Size: 18 3/4\"H X 14\"WTwo handled patinated Bronze Urns cast after the model by Claude Ballin
with Greek key, acorn & oak leaf foliate, the handles surmounted by Janus Heads
and terminating in boar masks.Very beautifully Bronze Urns..excuse some of the pictures,they are green patinaed not blue : /If you would like to see more pictures I have another 40 I can forward to you.
There was a similar Urn for sale on in about this size for well over double the price of this pair.
Similar Cast Bronze Urns like this in various sizes sell at Sotheby\'s & Christies.

After one of thirteen different pairs of urns of larger size made for the marble parapets separating the
Parterre du Nord from the Parterre du Midi at Versailles,where they are still in position.Claude Ballin (1615-1678),goldsmith to Louis XIV,was commissioned to design the ensemblewhich were then molded by Legendre,Mangnier,Tuby and Angulier and cast by Duval after 1665.
Several of Ballins drawings for the Versailles Vases are in the Bibliotheque Nationale.
Later in the 19th Century,the Versailles urns were copied in various mediums and in reduced sizes
by foundries such as Drenne,Dugel,A.Beurdeley,Barbezat et Cie and Barbedienne..(and since).Janus..coming from the latin word for door.
The Roman God of beginings and transitions, thus was placed in all manner of doorways,passageways, gateways and entrances.
From Janus comes the word January.
