This sale is for a beautiful antique Japanese cloisonne jar & lid from the Meiji Golden Age of Cloisonne (1868 - 1912). The focal point of the design is a large colorful three-toed dragon with goldstone flecks on his body. The dragon is highly detailed and wraps around the center of the jar (almost 12\" long). There are medallions around the top of the jar with traditional Japanese design motifs and more goldstone. The background behind the dragon is white with cloisonne clouds. The colors on the jar are classic green, blue, pink, yellow, black and white as often seen in the Golden Age.
The lid has a black border at the bottom. Above the border there is a decorated white background with three clouds in pink, yellow, green and black. The lid is topped by a brass finial which is tight and secure (not always the case with finials). The inside of the lid and jar are covered with green enamel. The lid sits down a little in the jar and is secure when on display.
The jar has a green circle with clouds at the bottom and stands on three brass feet with black diaper borders. There is a pink flower in the center of the green circle at the very bottom. You can barely see the green bottom when the jar is upright. It is a wonderful surpise when you pick up the jar and see the lovely decorated bottom. Japanese artisans sometimes created a special unexpected surpise like this in their work. There is a black border above the green circle and below the white clouds where the dragon lives.
I purchased the dragon jar a few years ago as pre-owned. There are no damages or repairs to the jar. No chips or dents. There is very minor pitting as expected with age. I could not find any enamel loss on the outside of the jar. There is a spot of enamel loss on the inside of lid which cannot be seen when the lid is on the jar. The finial is very tight. The jar is in excellent antique condition.
