……If you follow our sales, then you know that for a while we were listing a large collection of original Oil Paintings by the New York Social Realist artist, Frances Jacobson (1923-2011.) We will be listing more of these paintings this week! ... We all instantly fell in love with her large, bold, social-realist Portrait Paintings of people throughout New York. There are examples of workers, dancers, children and adults, all depicted living their daily life. After some research we were surprised to find that Frances Jacobson’s work did not bring thousands of dollars, because she was so talented! Then we found out exactly why her paintings are not worth what they should be. Frances was born in the 20s, when women were expected to get married, and have a family. At a very young age she knew that she was meant to be an artist, but she did not get the opportunity to achieve her dream until much later in life. She was actually offered a full art scholarship to Cornell University in 1943, but her father refused to allow her to go and encouraged her to get married and have children. After raising her three children, one of which had a serious illness, Jacobson finally pursued her lifetime dream of being an artist. She enjoyed painting people throughout New York and depicted them exactly how she saw them. Because of that, many of her figures have troubled faces, as Frances refused to alter what people looked like, or how they were feeling. Her work is often compared to the well known and successful New York realist artist of the same period, Alice Neel, and had Frances been allowed to become an artist in the 40s, her work would certainly be valued at equal to or greater than that of Neel.
