Shell currency has been used since the beginning of trade and is found in most every country: simple, with the good earth ground into the pores of shell by decades ofconstantwear. Smooth shell, - humble origins and yet so beautiful. There\'s more at play than appearance - its also about the cultures and societies that birthed and used these items.
Each of these discs was made by an individual, probably with children running about, dogs yapping, birds and insects singing, talking to companions. They were used as bride price, dowry, to purchase goods and property. The discs were woven into belts, worn as necklaces, adorned foreheads.There were multiple uses, just as other cultures use silver and gold coins as adornment but also currency. WWII was decades in the future. The people went about their lives.
At our Chicago area bead shows, when noticed at all, elements similar to those sold at Christie\'s ( shown at top of blog) and exhibited with pride in fine tribal art galleries aretossed back into the tray with a dismissive gesture.I\'ve been known to silently remove the entire display tray of shell currency from the table, as if keeping the precious contents safe from the careless hands of young children.Luckily my friend/employer feels the same way and only nods in agreement.After years of witnessing this lack of respect for cultural artifacts and realizing somebody had to do something,lest these treasures fall into the clutches of the undeserving and non - bead worthyI decided to become pro - active, offering African and NewGuineashell currencies a loving home where they\'d all be treasured and given proper care.Maybe I use a few in a necklace (above) or sell a small one to a designer friend, or gift one to somebodyreverent to the traditions that fostered these works, those artisans who created and wore them so many decades ago.Above, 2approximately36\" strands of conus shellcurrencyfrom theSolomonIslands, on the original macrame belt. The largest diameter disc is 2.5\" . Most are between 100 to 200 years old,beautifully worn.
My mission is to gather and care for all the unwanted conus and clam shell rings and discs languishing in the Midwest and anywhere else. I\'m only half joking here! These shells have come a long way from their place of origin.At one time sea creatures lived in the shells, and then there\'s the purity of form itself.
