Large 21\" Tall Daruma, Spectacular Detail

Exquisiteantique hand craftedstatue ofBodhidharma wearing highly detailed, brocaded silken robes. The intricate imagery and attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular, with a dazzling array of fierce dragons flying amongst the clouds, rendered in lifelike, three dimensional fashion. Stunningbrushwork and masterful shading brings forth hundreds of individual scales, sharp talons, swirling clouds, and vibrant edge banding. Too much to list, see photos for all of the fabulous detail. Known as Daruma in Japan, Bodhidharma is the5th Century monk who brought Buddhism to the far east from India. Also considered the father of tea and meditation; tradition states that while meditating for nine years, he fell asleep and was so incensed that he plucked off his eyelids to stay awake. Where they fell,it is said that the first tea plant sprung from the earth to assist future meditators in their practice. This magnificent statue is the finest rendering of Bodhidharma that we have ever seen. Very lifelike posture and expression, and beautiful folds and draping onhis elegant robe. Of significant size, measuring approximately 21 inches high.Crafted from exceptionally fine hariko papier machein the fashion of Noh masks, over which a thin layer of gesso was applied before painting. Brilliant coloration with polychrome pigments and hand gilding, bearing a sublime patinafrom approximately 100 years of appreciation.Absolutely spectacular piece with minute details and superb craftsmanship. Signed with an incised signature on the reverse.Very impressivefrom every angle with astrong, yet serene presence. Commands attention from all the way across the room. Would make anoutstanding centerpiece for the discriminating collector of the finest, world class Japanese antiques.
