Over time, I have listed many examples of this beautiful style of Madeira embroidery from my collection of fine heritage linens.

The quality of the stitch work is always perfection personified and worked to exceptional standards by highly skilled people dedicated to their craft.

I love listing Madeira work as each piece is so different in design, colour and embroidery.

This one does not disappoint especially as the embroidery covers nearly the entire area of the tablecloth.

This is elaborate and has been extensively embroidered with traditional colours used in this kind of Madeira embroidery instead of thenormal cream and ecru.

The detail is quite exceptional ~ breathtakingly beautiful ~ so please look carefully at my images as they are an important part of my listing and an opportunity for you to see the amazing detail.

At each corner the design features a large Art Nouveau style many petalled flowers in light blue with soft green foliage.The stitch work utilised on these flowers is firmly worked raised satin stitch embroidery enhanced with French knots, seed stitch and intricate drawn thread work detail in light yellow for the flower centres. Between each corner there are other flowers ~ pink and blue surrounded by elaborate cut work two shaped oblongs in taupe ~between which there is a fleur de lys worked with more cut work. (Image 5)

The centre is dominated with more elaborate embroidery (Image 2) creating an ornate feature with four more large blue flowers pointing to each corner and surrounded with smaller pink flowers green foliage and more cut work in taupe. This area measures 20\" x 20\" (51cm x 51cm)

Weaving between all this detail are many scroll shapes worked in both cut work and rows of French knots also in taupe.

Note also the little light yellow flowers with raised satin stitch petals and intricate eyelet embroidery in blue at the centres and the many light green little leaves also in raised satin stitch.

It is crafted from fine quality silky smooth Irish linen - cream coloured with an array of traditional coloured Madeira silks in pastel blue, pink, soft green, yellow and taupe.

There is closely worked raised satin stitch to give a textured appearance; extensive cut work ; tiny raised satin stitch knots; finely worked stem stitch, intricate drawn thread work and, one of my favourites - seed stitch.

It has a detailed traditional shaped scalloped hem with closely worked buttonhole stitch to create a very firm decorative edge pointed at the corners and accented with French knots.

Like all Madeira work it is elegant, classical and timeless and perfect for a period inspired home or to add to a personal collection of treasures for future generations.

Measurements: 50\" x 50\" (127cm x 127cm)

Condition: Vintage and appears to have had very little use having been carefully stored for very many years.

As far as I can tell this is in excellent vintage condition with no breaks in the brides indicating that this has been respected and carefully looked after. As with all my linens I have laundered and air dried this before listing. It is very clean, fresh and ready for use. i have just noticed one very feint mark at a corner which I must have missed when laundering this. It is hard to see, does not show up on the images and I do not think it detracts in any way from this magnificent masterpiece.

I have, as always, taken many images so that it is easier to appreciate and study the amazing needlework skills of those who created these heritage pieces from a bygone era. Please do so as they form part of my description and reflect the care, time & patience that have been spent on this beautiful work. I like to think the images speak for themselves.

Each piece I list is so very different and an expression of the creativity of the embroiderer – a precious resource in this age of mass production and one to be cherished for future generations.

I am passionate about preserving these pieces for future generations, always appreciative and aware of the skill and never under estimating the amount of time taken to produce these pieces.

Some are more detailed and elaborate than others but each seem to have their own personality reflecting that of the embroiderer and sense of achievement. So much so that many of the pieces I sell, either vintage or antique, have been stored away with little use and kept for best.

To me they are an art form and a joy to behold when so much is mass produced these days. I also feel very privileged to care for these beautiful pieces getting them ready for future generations.

I accept payment by PayPal only. I aim to invoice within 24 hours of the sale ending. Please pay me within 2 days or contact me immediately to let me know otherwise.

Combining Postage for Multiple Purchases

I am always happy to do this to save you money and am finding that more people are choosing this as a sensible option. However, please help me by letting me know that this is your preference and that you are intending to offer on other items.

As long as I know, I will always keep items on one side for a reasonable amount of time but I do ask that you still pay for them within 3 days of the sale ending on each item.

I will adjust the postage and insurance costs according to the weight and value of parcel when you have completed your purchases.

Please note that if the combined weight goes over 2 kg then it must be divided into two parcels due to Royal Mail weight restrictions.

Shipping

UK buyers: I normally send 2nd class standard delivery for items valued under £25. All purchases valued over £25 will need to be sent trackable due to Royal Mail\'s insurance policy.

International buyers:

Please contact me for postage and insurance costs before checking out.

Postage costs are out of my control but I do strive very hard to keep them to a minimum and take time to work out the best deal possible. I do not charge for handling. All packaging is free of charge.

I use standard Airmail for items valued under £25.

As a security measure and for everyone’s peace of mind all items with a value of £25 and over I use either trackable Airsure or International Signed For.

The approx: cost for postage and insurance for items with a value over £25 and up to £50 is:

For items with a value of over £50 and up to £500 the postage and insurance cost is:

If I have over-estimated the postage I always refund the difference.

I aim to post very promptly sometimes next day and always within 3 working days. I rarely post on Saturdays due to the Post Office closure at midday.

My linens are either antique or vintage and as such have a history of use, have been loved and treasured by previous owners. Many have come from English Country Estates. This to me is part of their charm and why I love collecting and selling them.

I aim to describe my linens as accurately as I can. I carefully inspect everything so that I can identify any age related flaws or blemishes and list these accordingly - carefully highlighting any defects I can see.

All my linens have been newly laundered and, where possible, air dried for added freshness. I iron all my embroidery and lace on the reverse side to enhance all the detail. I only use Environmentally friendly products - washing everything by hand and never use a tumbler dryer.

I love packing carefully with layers of acid free tissue paper and pretty satin ribbons before wrapping with bubble wrap and brown paper to what I hope is a very high standard. My linens have been treasured by generations and I like to show them, their previous owners and my buyers respect by taking care in this way.
