MAGNIFICENT LARGE BAROQUE SILVERFRONT ANGEL ALTAR RELIQUARY
WITH A LARGE RARE RELIC OF
THE TRUE CROSS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
AND ORIGINAL DOCUMENT
Frascati 1744 / 1802
What a magnificent piece - and one of the largest reliquaries with one of the largest relics of the True Cross ever offered on .
It comes from the private chapel of the Counts of Segna, an old Noble family in Latium, the mountain region (Monte Albani) southeast of Rome.
A richly decorated Barocque silverfront reliquary, a masterpiece of the Roman silversmiths of the \"golden age\" of Roman Baroque, with two serene faces of cherubs (putti) left and right of the relic section and another cherub\'s head at the foot, donated in 1802 by Count Gennaro Segna.
Height: 64 cm (ca. 26 inches).
It holds a filigree silver theca with two large splinters ofthe most precious relics of christendom,
THE TRUE CROSS OF OUR LORD.
The theca is perfectly sealed with the original red wax seal of the Bishop of Frascati.
It comes with its ORIGINAL DOCUMENT, signed and issued on May 18, 1744 by His Eminence Cardinal Joseph Accorambonus (1672-1747), Bishop of Frascati (in Latin: Tusculum), confirming that the two splinters were \"particles of the wood of the Most Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, fixed in the shape of a Cross\", \"taken from authentic locations\" and collected in an \"oval-shaped silver theca\", and allowing the public veneration of this precious relic.
The relic was obviously confirmed by this successor, Bishop Marinelli, who signs an impression of his red wax seal, identical with the actual red wax seal on the reliquary. We can assume that this happens when the theca was transferred into the large altar reliquary and exposed for public veneration, which required a confirmation by the new bishop.
Please note that although the red wax seal of a Bishop always guarantees the authenticity of a relic, a document is necessary for public veneration, e.g. in case you want to inherit this precious piece to your parish church.
The Most Holy Cross ofOur Lord Jesus Christ
According to severalChurch historians of the 4th and 5th century, the True Cross was discovered in325 AD when Emperor Constantine the Great ordered the removal of a pagan templebuilt by Hadrian over the site of the Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre. Beneaththe structure, in an old cistern, three crosses, the title with the inscription\"Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews\", and three nails were found. Inthe presence of the Empress Helena, mother of Constantine, the Cross of Christwas identified by the \'titulus\' and the nail holes, and later confirmed by amiracle. It was laid upon a sick woman who was immediately miraculously cured.
Helena divided themost precious wood into several parts, leaving a fragment in Jerusalem, sendinga second to her son in Constantinople and taking a third to Rome. A part of itand half of the title with the inscription I NAZARINUS R... is still preserved andvenerated in the Basilica di S. Croce, one of the seven main churches of the Eternal City. In1998, a careful investigation was commissioned by the Holy See and sevenIsraeli expertson the dating of inscriptions (comparativepalaeography)dated its letters into the 1st century, the time of Christ. This suddenly gave the \'legend of the Finding of the Cross\' a lot ofcredibility.
Already in 349 AD, St.Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem, stated that the True Cross \"has beendistributed, fragment by fragment, from this spot (Jerusalem) and has alreadynearly filled the world\", confirming the early practise of distributingtiny particles of the Most Holy Wood. When St. Paulinus of Nola sent one to afriend in ca. 401 AD, he wrote: \"Receive a great gift in a little case andtake this segment as an armament against the perils of the present and a pledgeof everlasting safety\". He stressed that \"even the smallest particlebears in it the whole power of the Cross of Christ\".
The claim of the\"enlightened\" sceptics, that all relics of the True Cross would besufficient to build a ship, was proven wrong in 1870 by the French scholarRohault de Fleury, who mathematically calculated the volume of all relics ofthe True Cross in all European Cathedrals and found them all together havingthe mass of only one third of a Roman cross!
