ELKINGTON HISTORY
Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English silver and certainly the most important in silver plate. They began life in Birmingham as a company of silversmiths in 1836, and experimented with improving gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success.
Elkington held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. The Elkington & Co.

The originators of silver-plating were George Richards Elkington and Henry Elkington who began their research in times of the industrial revolution. By the 1830\'s they had patented their processes and 1840 saw the technique of electro-plating brought to perfection.

John Culme, in his Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, said that \"Elkington Electroplate was soon accepted with the result that the firm allowed a number of manufacturers to use the technique under licence. Among the earliest granted were those of Christofle & Cie of France\".

Royal Endorsements
In 1868, Queen Victoria permitted much of the royal plate to be copied by Elkingtons and after that a convention was entered into by \"several Princes of the reigning families of Europe\" whereby they agreed mutually to assist the company in allowing copies of their own national objects for the process of art.

Royal Warrants
For its excellence in artistic quality and fine design for which the company has received the highest possible awards at the Great International Exhibitions, Elkington & Co has been awarded the Legion d\'Honneur of the French Republic and has the distinction and honour of holding Royal Warrants to their late Majesties Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, King George V, Queen Mary and King George VI, as well as the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) and H.R.H. the late Princess Christian and their late majesties the King of Spain and King of Italy.

RMS Titanic & White Star Line
Elkington were the suppliers of flatware to the luxury dining sections on board the Titanic and other ships in the White Star Line fleet.

CUSTOM MADE ITEMS
What is a Custom Made piece?

Custom made pieces are made from an original piece in your pattern that are not otherwise available or difficult to find on the market, especially in discontinued patterns. Hollow handle items are made from an original handle in your pattern with a new stainless implement. Then the piece is hand-finished by a highly skilled silversmith in the USA.
Now that many sterling patterns have been discontinued, custom pieces have become a staple in the sterling silver industry and are widely offered by mainstream sterling flatware dealers.
All custom orders are made-to-order and usually ship within 5-7 business days. Please be aware of this extended shipping time on Custom Made items when ordering.
