MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, PSALM & MOTIF SAMPLER BY ANN SAUNDERS AGED 12 1850:

Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Saunders aged 12 - 1850. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The top section of the linen is stitched with a central spray of roses with a church and bird on either side of its ribboned stems and a fruit basket, birds, crown, windmill and star on each side of the roses. The central section of the linen is stitched with Psalm XXIII which has a flower basket and floral urn on each side. The bottom section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Life, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. On each side of the figures is tiny house and black dog with Ann\'s details stitched above them \"Ann Saunders Aged 12 Years With Ditch School November 5th 1850\" There is a small floral garland above the Tree which contains the date of 1850 with a tree on either side with a stag and dog standing beneath its foliage which then has a flower basket, heart and bird above. The bottom edge of the linen is stitched with a meandering trefoil leaf border whilst the side and top edges are stitched with a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark and a few small areas of damage. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The colours of the silk are good with some bleeding to the stitch work of the Psalm. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the edges of the linen have been cut with pinking shears at some point of time which has resulted in some fraying along the bottom edge and a small amount of stitch loss to the edging borders.
