The history of the flying saucer begins during World War Two, when fighter
pilots claimed to see flying discs outside their aircraft and doing
impossible maneuvers. The saucers were thought to be a secret weapon from
an enemy government. With the Germans developing rocketry at this time, this
was as valid an idea as any. When the war ended and these flying saucers continued
to be seen around the world, many people assumed we were being visited from other worlds
and that flying saucers were spacecraft.
The mid century period was experienced with a back drop of sci-fi films
that embraced this saucer fascination. The Day The Earth Stood Still and Forofferden Planet
are great examples of the flying saucer as a symbol of power and
a vision of the future.
The Dazor saucer lamp was one of those mid century things that arrived
unexpectedly. Dazor was one of the most respected makers of business
and industrial lighting during the deco period and through the war period.
Dazor was renowned for tank-like strength and reliability.
They perfected articulating task lamps and most graphic designers,
architects and jewelers had a Dazor task lamp on their desk.
By the fifties, the mid century movement had caught up with Dazor.
Suddenly, style was added to functionality and durability. The designers at
Dazor were not immune to the saucer craze sweeping the world.
The result was a new group of saucer task lamps that performed the same
duties as earlier Dazors, but with great style and atomic-age panache!
The new lamps became a hit with an ever broader market.
The saucer lamp became a prestige item and doctors, lawyers and bankers
had them on their desks. The Dazor name guaranteed reliability and durability
and doctors and lawyers loved this association of permanence and
security that the Dazor conveyed.
Its lines are beautiful and yet solid. It screams atomic age - and yet does so
with an almost stately grace. In this sense the Dazor was completely unique
among minimalist lamps and is coveted today by those who want
to capture some of that stately atomic style for their living spaces.
This lamp is in very good condition. The paint is lustrous and rich.
There are some scratches on the enamel of the lamp base,
some minor dents to the saucer shade and the
brushed brass shows some tarnish. The fiberglass diffuser
is in place and shows some age but is not scorched and has
not been used with too hot of an incandescent bulb.
Lamp is turned on by a switch on the cord.
A great addition to your office, New York penthouse or atomic ranch home!
