Up for sale is a wonderful vintage Zuni sterling silver turquoise, coral, mother of pearl and black jet sun face necklace handmade by Native American silversmith Mila Lasiloo!
The Zunis believe in six sacred directions, Above, North, East, South, West and Below. Each of the directions is associated with a color. North - yellow, East - white, South - Red, West - Blue, Below - black and Above - multi colored. The majority of Zuni inlay jewelry features turquoise, coral, black jet and mother of pearl as a representation of the sacred directions.
The most common sun face is the full circle. In this design the center face will be surrounded by a fully symmetrical design typically accented by a feather like design. This design creates several meanings. First, the most obvious is the form of the Sun itself; the central Sunface surrounded by beams of light, shining down upon the Zuni. Another interpretation is that the feather design offers the Sunface freedom to soar and glide through the sky thus enabling him to create sunrise and sunset. From this comes another interpretation – the Sunface associated with birds, and most commonly the eagle. Thus, as an eagle, the Sunface is both wise and powerful.
The necklace is 20.5\" long and weighs57.1g.The middle pendant measures3-7/16\"long and2\"wide. The side pendants are 1-3/8\" in diameter. The back of the necklace is engraved with the maker\'s name. The necklace has been tested and examined for purity and is sterling silver. The necklace is in very good, gently used condition with a moderate patina.
