You are offerding on a very large specimen of a museum quality, antique, early Victorian cameo of Eos/Aurora the Goddess of the Dawn.

This is one of a collection of cameos found in an old box, in the drawer of an 18th century French writing desk. This is a unique treasure, hidden away in the desk for over 60 years! We sold half of the collection about 1 year ago and the estate has just given us permission to sell the rest!!! Please see ourOTHER CAMEOSfor the rest of the cameo collection for sale.

This beautiful cameo is mounted in a heavy 18k gold bezel and ornate frame decorated with leaves & vines. The gold is not marked but has been tested to be 18k. The cameo is unusual in size and subject. The hand carved shell cameo depicts Eos or Aurora, the Goddess of Dawn, floating in the clouds in a flowing gown, holding roses. On the back of the cameo there is a \"C\" clasp pin closure which is fully functional and a small enhancer loop from which your favorite pearl/gem/charm may hang from.

The very large cameo is completely hand carved of shell, incredibly detailed and in high relief of a full figure, very rare, not your typical carving of a bust.

This an antique cameo, not a modern shell, glass or plastic reproduction.

The oval shell cameo measures approx. 1 3/4\" tall by approx. 2 1/8\" wide. With the frame, it measures approx. 2 1/4\" tall by 2 3/4\" wide.

This item is an estate piece and it is in excellent condition for its age. There is some minor wear consistent with the hand carved material and the age & use of this antique piece, such as a couple offaint natural shell lines only visible when the cameo is backlit, not visible to the naked eye.We would remind buyers that this piece is very rare, few such large examples of antique carved shell cameos survive due to the fragility of the natural material and carving. As usual, we have left the piece in its original condition and will let the new owners clean it if they choose to do so. Please use the zoom tool on the photos provided to inspect the item.
