Headhunting raids were animportant element of Asmat culture untilmissionaries suppressed the practice. The deathof an adult, even by disease, was believed to becaused by an enemy, and relatives sought to takea head in an endless cycle of revenge andpropitiation of ancestors. Heads were thoughtnecessary for the rituals in which boys wereinitiated into manhood. Cannibalism was asubsidiary feature of the rituals that followedthe taking of heads.The first apparent sighting of the Asmat peopleby explorers was from
the deck of a ship led by a Dutch trader, JanCarstensz in the year 1623.
Captain James Cook and his crew were the firstto actually land in Asmat
on September 3, 1770 (near what is now thevillage of Pirimapun).
According to the journals of Captain Cook, asmall party from the
HM Bark Endeavor encountered a group of Asmatwarriors;
sensing a threat, the explorers quicklyretreated.The Asmat are an Indonesian cannibalistic tribeon the island;
Papua. Known to use human skulls under theirheads for pillows,
they also have been reported to eat human brainsmixed with sago
worms straight from halved human skulls. TheAsmat live in
mangrove vegetation near the sea and rivers, onthe south side
of the western part of New Guinea. The Asmat, inaddition to hunting
for skulls, also worshipped them. Ancestorskulls are stripped of
brains and eyes! Nasal passages are closed toprevent evil spirits
from entering or exit the body. Asmat decoratedskulls
are displayed in sacred places inside Asmatdomiciles.Asmat art, most noticeably elaborate, stylizedwood carving,
is designed to honor ancestors. Many Asmatartifacts have been
collected by the world\'s museums, among the mostnotable of which
are those found in the Michael C. RockefellerCollection at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City andthe Tropen Museum
in Amsterdam.
Until the 1950s, their remote and harsh locationisolated the Asmat.
from other peoples. It was not until themid-20th century that they
came into regular contact with outsiders. TheAsmat were documented
headhunters and cannibals, and as a consequencewere left
largely undisturbed until the mid-20th century.
