Magnificent German Parcel Gilt 750 Silver Torah Shield (TAS), Ca 1870, Judaica.
A magnificent German Parcel gilt 750 silver (NOT silver plated) Torah shield (TAS), Ca 1870, Judaica.
The shield is chased with matte leafage surrounding the quilted field.
With typical applied symbols including – fluted pillars with gilt eagles finials, the Tables of The Decalogue embossed with the Ten Commandments flanked by two ramping lions and topped with a Torah crown.
The hinged plaque box includes four double sided plaques (gilt) with Jewish holydays in Hebrew.
Connected with a chain.
With associated inscribed English pendant shield – "October 27th 1911, Cheshvan 5th 5672, in loving memory", the pendant is later and bears English hallmarks for London, dated 1911, maker's mark for Joseph Zweig (see picture).
Marked – "750".
Excellent condition, recently polished.
Measures: 32cm X 27.5cm / 12.6in X 10.8in.
