Magnificent Victorian Travelling Inkwell and Vesta Case

Wonderful pair of large fine quality leather clad Travelling Inkwell and Vesta Case dating to the mid 1800′s, both are gilt embossed with the name “Berrys Patent” and the Royal Crown Symbol they are in excellent condition the leather having developed a beautiful deep rich colour and good patina as you can see in the photographs.

There is a wonderful history regarding the infamous “Mr Berry”, he invented products to improve “The Miseries of Human Life” and developed designs that would enable one to have a Travelling Inkwell with a stopper that would not allow the Ink to spill or for a Smelling Salt bottle that would not leak its contents into your pocket or handbag.

It was reported in the newspaper called “The Spectator” on 21 JULY 1832 that “Ladies especially are lovers of neatness, and every time they dip their pen in Mr. BERRY’S portable ink-glass, or have recourse to his improved smelling-bottle, they will bless the ingenious inventor” what a wonderful testament to his designs. It also states that “the lid is the stopper, a piece of ground glass or cahoutchouc (French for rubber) being inserted in the top, which shuts down close upon the orifice of the bottle, and renders it air-tight” this was obviously the start of the design for Travelling inkwells produced over time.

The Vesta case has the original striking plate and match holder this lifts to reveal the storage compartments for the matches. The Ink case has a beautiful glass ink bottle which is is excellent condition. Both cases open by pressing the brass button at the front and have lovely brass handles. They are both in very good condition and would make a fantastic gift for someone or make a fine addition to any collection.

The measurements are approx just under 2″ high, 1.25″ deep and 2″ wide.
