Ofthe three Mark Hopkins Sculptures we are presenting for sale, this is myfavorite.

Myfather was a fisherman; master of the fly rod and reel and tied his own flies. He loved the details of this art…casting techniques, line selection, flies, sometimes dry and sometimes wet. He wasalways striving for simplification, minimizing; concepts lost on a kid, butremembered as an adult. I remember casting drills in the backyard of our home todifferent sized inner tubes. He tried to impart his vast knowledge to me, butit never took. I do not know why. To this day I do not fish.

Idid however accompany him on his adventures to the, then Northern Arizonawilderness in pursuit of that monster king fish that “got away” on the previoustrip. I remember no people, the stark beauty of the desolate “secret” places heknew of from a lifetime of exploration and fishing in that region. I remember every trip had similar elements; along slow drive down a dirt road, a Ranger road, a path, until vehicletransportation was no longer possible, a long walk along a stream, and thecareful selection of the camp site so as not to disturb anything so sacred aspure nature. His actions became so focused, observant, yet relaxed; very littletalking was allowed and when it was you would whisper. Movement was more likecreeping around, footsteps were chosen, routes were random…and then the streamwould emerge and the fishing would start. While completely detached in his concentration, he was wonderful companyand the example of his efforts have lasted a lifetime. Being with him andwatching him enjoy himself so immensely is what I loved.

Asone reviewer of this particular sculpture puts it, “The air is cool and crisp, and the stream is Fast and Shallow. Fromthe bank, this angler has made a flawless cast into what he thinks is the idealpocket. Sometimes though, even the most skilled fisherman must have a littleluck - the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time.”

Thisabsolutely stunning piece of art reminds me of my father.

Please read a remarkable artist’s biography(fromthe Mark Hopkins Gallery Website):

Mark Hopkins is considered one ofthe premier sculptors in the United States today. From tabletop sculpture tomonuments, his work is displayed in homes, offices, and public settings aroundthe world.

Mark Hopkins’ work is in every way,a reflection of its creator. It reveals Mark’s total fascination with nearlyevery conceivable aspect of life: from history, children, sports, music andreligion to wildlife of the land, sea and air. With a style so flowing andalive it has been called “bronze in motion,” the work is as passionate andexpressive as the artist himself.

For as long as he can remember, Markhas been captivated by form and design. From the time he was young boy, withthe encouragement of family and teachers, he worked to develop his innatetalent, and explore the various techniques and mediums of sculpture.

In addition to his skill as anartist, Mark made himself a technical expert in the art of “lost wax” bronzecasting. At the Mark Hopkins Sculpture foundry, Mark monitors the castingprocess, insuring that the integrity of his work is maintained throughout itscreation in bronze. With the help of many talented craftsmen, Mark endeavors toestablish an enduring legacy of high-quality bronze sculpture.

It has taken half a lifetime forMark to attain his preeminent status in the world of art. For many years, thenecessity of providing for his large family took Mark into other, moretraditional vocations. Throughout those years, though, Mark never stoppedsculpting. He knew in his heart that it was the work he was born to do. Fromthe many challenges and experiences of his life came a remarkably unique styleof art.

Mark Hopkins constantly challengeshimself to translate the richness of life and nobility of the human soul intoenduring sculptural form. In his words, “I strive to express beyond the image,to catch spirit, to reveal deeper emotions, and to share joy.” As he continuesto rise to that challenge, his work is attaining an honored place in thehistory of art.
