Mark Schultz burst on the scene in the mid-1980s with his Xenozoic Tales (later rebranded as Cadillacs and Dinosaurs), mixing a little bit of Frazetta with a little bit of Williamson to produce a retro/modern take on the classic adventure story.
Here we have a preliminary sketch for the cover of issue #5, showing hero Jack Tenrec and busty heroine Hannah Dundee in an underwater adventure. Schultz ultimately reworked the design for a slightly different effect, with Tenrec facing out, the boat removed, and a flatter dino-fish added. (I\'ve included the final cover for comparison only; the comic is not included in the sale. Personally I prefer the Hannah in this version over the one Shultz ended up using.)
The preliminary is in pencil on illustration paper and is nicely detailed in both the figures of Jack and Hannah and the aquatic dino. The paper has browned with time, less so along the edges (which were covered by a matt), but the pencil lines remain crisp and clear. There is a slight tear in the upper right hand corner, which is more prominent in the scan than on the page.
