Original Mark Trail comic strip dated 08 - 22 and marked as Dodd and Elrod, which if actually done by the creator Ed Dodd and Jack Elrod, would have been created prior to Mr. Dodd\'s retirement in 1978. However, the cartoon strip has a copyright notice glued to it with copyright date of 1988 and the day and date of Monday, 08/22/1988 written on it in blue pencil.
Mr. Jack Elrod, the comic strip artist and writer of the strip after 1978 until 2014, signed and inscribed this 5.5\" x 17.5\" strip and sent a handwritten letter on his personal letterhead to a law student/cartoonist wannabe collector in the late 1980\'s or early 1990\'s. (Note that the handwritten letter has the address and phone number of the artist blocked out for privacy sake.)
The Mark Trail cartoons originally created in 1946 was syndicated through the New York Post to 45 newspapers in 1946. It was syndicated to 175 newspapers in 2006 by King Features. The comic strip acquired almost a cult following of \"Trailheads\" due to what wikipedia called an amusing charm, with its formulaic endings with the protagonists dashing in at the nick of time, giving the predictable villains a good beating before turning them over to the law.
