Hirst, Robert H. and Rowles, Brandt (1984) William E. James\'s Stereoscopic Views of the Quaker City Excursion, Mark Twain Journal, Vol 22, No 1, pp. 15-33 .The Quaker City Excursion traveled to Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. Plymouth Church Reverend Henry Ward Beecher was supposed to go on the excursion but opted out at the last moment. Many of the passengers were members of Beecher\'s Plymouth Church in Brooklyn. The photographer, W. E. James, went on to publish the Holy Land Series; 60 views of the excursion. This particular view was taken while the passengers were awaiting a visit from Alexander, the Emperor of Russian (who ended up being a no-show that day) and is not a part of the published set. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was hired by a New York newspaper to write \"letters\" about the excursion. Twain went on to write the acclaimed book \"Innocents Abroad\" about the excusion. There are no other known photographs of him taken during the trip (except for one very distant view of Twain among men standing in the ruins of Baalbek). Good/VG condition. Minor staining/spotting.
