Up for sale are a matched pair of custom modded MXL 991 Condenser Microphones. They are in good physical condition with some light scratches and a couple deep scratches on the capsule of one of them. The silkscreen is also wearing off. That of course, doesn\'t affect the sound, but I wanted you to be aware so please look at the pictures. More importantly, they work great and sound great. The changes that have been have included many electronic components and several physical changes that overall, create a clear and detailed sounding microphone that picks up transients well. This is a decent mic in stock form, but is really great after these mods. Here\'s what\'s been modified:

The capsule housing has been milled down to reduce reflections in front of the diaphragm
The diaphragm mesh was changed to a larger grade for a slightly more open sound
The side vents have been enlarged to reduce the Helmholtz resonator effect of the air chamber behind the capsule. This helps to reduce @ 7K bump in frequency response
Perforations were made in the capsule back plate to increase the air volume for slightly more low end response (see comparison picture)
Many capacitors in the signal path have been upgraded to film for clearer sound and increased low-end frequency range
Many resistors have been upgraded to military grade metal film for cleaner sound
The coupling capacitor at the diaphragm has been upgraded to a more transparent film type
The two output transistors have been upgraded to 2SA1084
The input JFET has been upgraded to a J305 JFET for less-fuzzy high frequencies
Zener diodes values have been changed to increase the capsule voltage for improved signal-to-noise ratio
Ferrite choke added around xlr wires to prevent VHF from entering the circuit

I really like the sound of these mics as they are very responsive to high-end transients from instruments like cymbals and guitar picking, without sounding too harsh - much less harsh than stock. I have used them on acoustic guitar and drums and have gotten professional results. I think you will like them too!
