Mauser, known especially for theirelegant art nouveau designs, produced some of the finest sterling of anyAmerican company. The name \"Mauser\"seldom appeared on the goods, only the tiny Mauser logo of the unicorn. “The1887-1903 Mauser marks are the unicorn, usually leaping to the left... impressed on one side of the bottom ofholloware, then \"925/1000 FINE” (fine is always in all caps), 90 degreesfrom the first mark, then the word \"sterling\" around another 90degrees, then a pattern number to complete the compass roundabout.” Aninternet source indicates that the unicorn only occasionally appeared on itemsmade between 1903 and 1913, and usually with the \"Mauser Mfg. Co. NewYork\" stamp.

Co. in the late 1890s.In 1903 MauserMfg.Co. merged with Hayes & McFarland Company and Roger Williams SilverwareCompany to form the Mt. Vernon Company Silversmiths Inc. Mauser acquired J.B. & S.M. Knowles Co.and its pattern dies in 1905, as well as some of Shiebler’s flatware dies in1910. Mt. Vernon was purchased by GorhamCorporation in 1913.
