Medieval Anglo-Saxon Amber Gold & Glass Necklace - 520 AD:
$2500.00

An Anglo-Saxon amber, gold and glass beaded necklace, dating to around 520 AD.

All the beads and clasp recovered from the same context and restrung with modern thread. The beads composed of beautiful amber, irregularly shaped, and a reticello glass pendant made from six twisted cables of opaque black, red and yellow glass. The clasp at the back is gold filigree, it likely originally formed part of a Roman necklace before being reused.

Though many so-called medieval and ancient necklaces can be found on the market, these are at best restrung with beads which mayhave come from different contexts. To have beads allfound inthe same context and restrung to something approachingtheir original aesthetic is extremely rare. Here we can see an Anglo-Saxon woman’s necklace preserved as it would have appeared 1500 years ago.

The woman who wore this necklace would certainly have been an individual of means; the reticello glass bead at the centre represents a high standard of craftsmanship, and are only rarely found across England and continental Europe. The amber would have originated in the Baltic, whilst the Roman filigree link must have been preserved forseveral generations before being utilised in this necklace.

A stunning and rare example.

Length of full necklace: 18 ½ inches.

Condition: Very good, beads with some wear and fissures. Please note that the gold clasp is merely aesthetic, it isfixed and does not open.
