The creator of thisstrikingprimarily men\'s wild horses bracelet isnone other than T*o*m*m*y Singer\'s son, Richard Singer, who learned silversmithing from his father and has been helping his fatherfor several years. He\'s now on his own and resurrecting thestyles and techniques that made his father and uncle famous yet creating a fresh new look.
When his father\'s health began to decline, he sold all his designs to a Texas import company. Richard then created his his own line ofjewelry and began marketing it about five years ago.
The Native American jewelry business can be enormously fascinating, frustrating, and even occasionally entertaining.
The slightly humorous aspect to all of this is that when Richard began selling his jewelry he didn\'t want his father to know. How he expected to keep such a huge secret inthe small, gossipy Navajo world of Indian jewelry was beyond me.
Richard continues the family tradition of fine overlay story scene work.
Thislargehandmade cuff bracelethonors the horse. Each polished surface you see is an individual, sterling silver overlay crafted from a separate sheet of sterling silver and then bonded to the bracelet \'blank\' to create a three dimensional design. Before bonding the story elements, however, Richard oxidized and reticulated the bracelet to create the dark, textured surface. He then used an engraver to add all the details on the horses, the sky above the Monument Valley rock formations, and the desert plants. Finally, he hand stamped the far shanks withboth the Monument Valley Ute designs (2) and the V shaped mountain design.
The Spanish invader/explorer Coronado introduced horses to the American southwest in the mid sixteenth century when he arrived searching for the fabled cities of gold. A Spanish solider kepta detailed journal of his travels and reported that upon seeing riders mounted on horses,Native Americansfled in terror believing it was a single creature.
After destroying as much Native American culture and religion as he couldwithout finding any golden cities, when Coronado left for Mexico he left behind hundreds of horses most of whom were animals of Arabian descent. Native Americans took as many as they wanted for transportation and farming, the remainderwere set free,and are the ancestors of the wild horses that freely roam the west and southwest to this day.
This domed bracelet is 1\" across from terminal to terminal. It has an inside measurement of 6¾\" with a carefully adjustable opening gap of 1¼\" making it suitable for wrists that are 8\" to 8½\" in circumference.
Richard Singer\'s hallmark and sterling stamp are on the back of the bracelet.
