Mens Navajo Ring Damele Turquoise Size 13 Sterling Silver Native American Rare Q

WELCOME to High Desert Turquoise!

One of the charming and, frankly, sometimes frustrating aspects of the Native American arts and crafts business is that little has changed in the last 150 years.

Finished work distribution channels have changed little. The majority of artisans still make things in their homes and then sell them to traders in the Four Corners areas. Pickups have replaced horses. Their tools are better than they once were. Designs have been improved. Sterling silver has replaced coin silver. But the basic distribution system has remained virtually unchanged.

Similarly, turquoise mining is still largely done with small hammers and picks because turquoise veins are often small and require very careful removal from the surrounding the host rock. Just a few families (and one retail corporation) own southwest turquoise mines many of whom have been in the turquoise mining business for generations. These experts can usually easily distinguish turquoise from its close relatives.

Dozens and dozens of different varieties of turquoise are found in the southwest as well as the close relatives of turquoise -- variscite, faustite, and chrysocolla. These stones are sometimes found in the same area as turquoise but normally have characteristics different enough from turquoise not be identified as turquoise, but sooner or later someone was bound to make an honest misidentification of stones.

Such was a case with the stones coming from the small family owned Damele mine in Nevada. Many of Damele stones that everyone thought and sold as turquoise turned out to be one of the highest grades of variscite ever found. The stone in this ring, however, is primarily turquoise though it probably contains some variscite.
