Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the Long Meadows (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, its wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the major players of the Swiss watch making profession, including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s original 23Z caliber model manual wind model (Ref. 2033) that dates to circa 1953 in excellent condition. This watch is crafted of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and features an untouched original dial and fancy ‘curved’ lugs – quite stunning.
Triple-signed, it measures 41mm lug tip to lug tip and 33mm in width (34.5mm with crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just over 1-1/4 inches wide, not including the winding crown. It has been fully serviced by my watchman David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent order, guaranteed untouched since it left the Longines factory 64 years ago.
It features applied solid yellow gold hour markers and Breguet numbers, raised gold dot 60 minute outer chapter, original gold metal Lance-style hands and a crosshair sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed LONGINES below the 12 (with winged hourglass trademark) and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The domed acrylic crystal in excellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Natural Yellow Solid Gold and in excellent PLUS shape – complete with those great “curly” lugs. The matching and unmarked gold finished winding crown is excellent, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the back lid is in pristine shape, no wear or engravings past or present. It is stamped 14 Karat Gold along the edge.
Looking inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels, 23Z, LXW with serial number #8,976,025. This number corresponds with a ca 1953 production date.
The inside case is signed LONGINES–WITTNAUER WATCH CO. INC., NEW YORK, GENEVA, MONTREAL – STAR W.C. CO., 14 KARAT GOLD – [Model] 2033 with case number below.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 17mm black hand crafted crocodile grain calf leather strap by Fluco, Germany with matching gold tone buckle. I can’t imagine a nicer, original 1950s Lonnie as this – the fancy lugs, the beautiful untouched dial – solid 14k gold! There’s a lot to like about this one.
