Lamassu bull

Dimensions:-

5.5 cm x 5.5 cm / 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 inches

Available here is a winged Lamassu bull amulet with considerable fine detail.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has an aged ochre patina.

The Lamassu were protective household deities from ancient Mesopotamian cultures. In the grandest of depictions, colossal standing statues would guard the gateways of temple and palace but small versions and amulets were available for domestic use by the general populace.

Early Sumerian forms showed a hybrid humanoid bull or lion standing on hind legs while Assyrian culture typically showed the Lamassu striding as the \'protective spirit\'. Assyrian Lamassu could also be shown with the head of a bull or man with either a lion or bull\'s body.

This example is purely a winged bull Lamassu with pronounced horns.

A very detailed amulet with precise engraving.
