MichaelLittle Elk was raised in South Dakota on theRosebud Reservation where he was fortunate enough to learn the traditions ofhis Native Lakota-Sioux culture. He was taught the family trade of pipe carvingat a very early age and continued developing this skill until he moved toColorado. It was there that he began to explore different carving techniquesusing a large selection of woods and metals. His creative passion for carvingexpanded and he began to apply these techniques to silver and gold jewelrydesigns.

Under the guidance of Native artists such as Charles Loloma, KennethBegay and Preston Monogye, he became more knowledgeable about the differentways of fabricating jewelry that helped him to develop his unique andcontemporary designs of today. All of his jewelry is hand made – not casted –including his signature Ã\'clawÃ\" bracelet.

Having the skills to create distinctiveand well-designed jewelry is important, but equally important are theinspirations, dreams, and visions that make each piece come alive and speak toyou. Incorporating a colorful mix of materials such as sugilite, opal,turquoise, coral, mother-of-pearl, and in some cases unusual materials, Michael gives life and movement to every individual piece. Each piecebecomes as majestic as the mountains and valleys that inspire him.

His sculptures consist of exotic woodsand sterling silver combinations that work in harmony with each other. Thematerials transform into a spiritual journey as your eyes follow the twists andturns of each detailed carving.

He incorporates many themes into hisartwork. Living on the Navajo reservation is a constant source of ancestrallegends that have been passed down for many generations. His people\'s storiesare his life\'s work and anyone who acquires a piece of his artwork will becarrying a part of the Indian way with them.

Hisjewelry and sculptures have been included in the collections of theSmithsonian\'s National Museum of the American Indian and numerous galleriesaround the United States.
