DESCRIPTION

This beautiful antique snuff box comes directly from the estate of one of the direct descendants of its original owner, a renowned Austrian physician, ERNST SCHILLING.

PLEASE NOTE: An additional rare item from Dr. Schilling\'s estate is also for sale in a separate listing – his medical diploma from the University of Vienna, Austria. It is a superb piece. Search for item 191463490714 \"1844 Vienna University Medical Diploma.\"

Dr. Schilling served the Austrian royal family in Vienna in the mid-1800s. His wife was a head-lady-in-waiting to the Austrian Empress.

An influential member of the Viennese aristocracy, Dr. Schilling was also a political activist in the 1850s and eventually emigrated with his family to the United States to start a successful practice in New York City. He joined with a group of other reformist physicians who worked tirelessly during and after the Civil War period to upgrade area hospitals to provide better care, especially for the needy. He died in New York in 1876 and is buried in Brooklyn.

• Measurements: 2-7/8\" L x 1-7/8\" W x 1/2\" H

• Weight: 90 g

• Heavyweight sterling silver, marked 935 (the Austrian sterling standard) inside center of bottom compartment.

• Inside is gold wash/gilded.

• Rich light-blue guilloche enamel on the top and all sides, in an intricate basketweave pattern; top has an additional patterned border, creating an elegant beveled effect.

• Top is bordered in a row of white pearls.

CONDITION

• Superb antique condition for a piece of this age, with the expected signs of wear for such a utilitarian piece.

• Enamel is solid and lustrous, with no chips.

• Pearls have a nice lustre, all are intact and securely seated.

• Hinge works correctly and has an internal spring mechanism, which closes the lid straight and securely.

• Issues to note:

Near right edge of lid - a small, superficial scratch, not very noticeable; see photo pointing out this area.

Near top edge of lid - First, let me say that I am not an expert in guilloche items, but I do know that in its highest form it is an extremely exacting and complicated technique, during which unexpected and tiny flaws can and do occur. The area I\'m noting is very small, about 1/4 inch long, and appears to me to be a slight imperfection in the original enameling/engraving process. It is beneath the clear surface enamel and consists of faint lines in the basketweave pattern that are only visible when holding the box at certain angles. It does not interrupt the pattern and is not at all noticeable. Again, please see my photos.

Bottom and inside of box - there are a few small spots of discoloration.
