Milton Caniff Original Pen Ink Self-portrait. Signed Dated RARE:
$599.95

Wow! An unbelievably rare find at a thrift store today. An original Milton Caniff ( world famous cartoonist) black and white pen & ink self-portrait signed and dated that was given presumably as a gift to “ John” on John’s birthday. The original Milton Caniff inscription reads “ to John - Happy Birthday from Bunny and MILTON CANIFF 29 July 1969 New York.” Milton Caniff was 62 at the time of this self-portrait. It’s nicely matted and framed and measures 9” X 11” ( 13” X 17” including the frame).

Self-portraits of Milton Caniff are ( I am told) extremely rare ( probably only a handful were ever painted and if they survived, they are probably in institutions or library collections) so this is ( most likely) the only known one ever offered for sale. Beautiful black and white pen and ink portrait with emotional impact, vibrant and so well executed. The brief bio that follows does mention his effective use of black and white ink effects:

“With his effective use of black-and-white ink effects and well-balanced emotions he most rightly earned the nickname \"Rembrandt of the Comic Strip\"

Brief Bio:

Milton Caniff was one of the grandmasters of American comics, and one of the pioneers in character-driven comic stories. His creations \'Terry and the Pirates\' (1934-1946) and \'Steve Canyon\' (1947-1988) are both landmarks in newspaper comics. Although he wrote and drew the latter for nearly 40 years, it is Terry who had the biggest impact on comics history. Caniff was the first to craft truly realistic and multi-layered comic characters, whose personalities evolved as the years progressed. His comics are renowned for their exciting, action-packed stories which often take place in exotic locations. But he never lost sight of the human element, which helped his series gather a massive fanbase. With his effective use of black-and-white ink effects and well-balanced emotions he most rightly earned the nickname \"Rembrandt of the Comic Strip\". Together with his contemporaries Alex Raymond and Harold Foster, Caniff can be considered one of the most influential artists in the field of realistically-drawn comics.
