Camp Near Memphis, Dec. 18, 1862
Dear Sister
I take my [pen in hand] to inform you that [I am] well at present, and hoping that [these few lines may find you the same. We have just arrived back to Memphis again without finding many of them. The cavalry captured seven hundred of them. There were five-hundred of them [that] took the oath of allegiance to the United States. We have traveled two-hundred miles since we left here. Someof the new regiments-the half of them-were sick. The wagons were full of them. Some of them think that is hard times. They have not seen anything yet. I have not seen Martin for two weeks. I don\'t know whether he is well or not. The next march will be to Vicksburg [ ]. Our army is made up [ ] again. I would like to be at [ J at the dedication of the church. I wish that this war was over soon, for I am getting tired of this war, for it is hard marching through the country from one state to another. Martin has come over. He is in the tent. He is well. I am still contented with my lot, for if it is my lot to fall in battle, my time is come, and I must get to that God that gave me. Tell Mrs. Bake that I send [J to her. Now I must [J for [ J time, so not more at present, but remain your brother until death,

Direct your letter to Co. A. 6. Reg. Mo. Vol. Infantry P.S. I never received those papers you sent to me.

A good morning to you all. They carry those beds along with them. We have made a bed out of cane poles wove together with bark. They make a good bed, so I think. I saw Martin the other day. He was well then. Wes Reel has gone to Illinois to get rid of draft in Missouri. I think if old Andy Curtain will fetch out some of them home cowards and Copperheads to save their own state, for the rebs are coming into the old state again. Now you may think it strange for the men in this army to say that they wish for them to go into Pennsylvania to give some of them a taste of what war is. Maybe then they will come out, for nothing more nor less will fetch them out in defense of their state. If the rebs get into the state of Pennsylvania they will make some of the lads open there. Some of their fine houses will soon be in ashes. Then they will cry, why did the army not stop them, and save their property. I say for them to get a taste of war. Now you know what is the opinion of the army in general, so you may know what they think of the North men such as Copperheads. Our regiment is going to [be] consolidated. There are only 100 & 5 men for duty, and no sick men here. Our regiment has lost some three hundred men since we left Memphis, so the once-big Sixth Mo. is no more. Nothing of it is left of it but a shadow, but [what] is left of [it] is proud of the little band. So is our general Frank P. Blair, and old daddy Sherman, as the boys call him, for he is like a father to us. They think in the North that he is a man that drinks, but they are mistaken in the man, for he is the first man in the army. If he sees a crowd of men standing together, he will mix in with them, and talk with them, and joke. Sometimes on a march he will come round where the boys are cooking for his coffee, the same as the rest of the men, and the boys would share the last cracker with [him]. I must stop for this time, so nothing more at present, but remain your brother,

Thomas. M. Coleman

P.S. When you write to [the] Mitchell again, give my best respects. Tell Ellen to write and all that want to, and [I] will answer them when we get into Vicksburg. I think that won\'t be long, for they . .
