Museum Quality Pendant byHelen long, who is recognized as one of the most important Navajo Kachina designers in history. 20th century Navajo jeweler, wife of Jimmie Long, Helen Long is best known for her Kachina, Yei and Eagle dancer figures. Often her figures were highlighted with bezel set coral and turquoise.
Mrs Long fashioned rings, pendant, bola ties and bracelets. When she signed her work, she utilized \"HL\" or \"H\" for her hallmark. Examples of her work are included in the Peabody Museum, Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. She is referenced in Barton Wright\'s book \"Hallmarks of the south west\" as well as in Gregory Schaaf\'s volume\"American Indian JewelryI 1,200 Artist Biographies. Helen Long was well known all over the Native American art community for making fascinating jewelryusing a silver Kachina design. Her grandchildren are presently renown silversmiths who learned the craft from her.
The pendant is a Yei Warrior Dancer Kachina with fantastic detail, earrings, necklace, bracelets, hand shaker, dress regalia, and leg shakers of sterling silver beads and twisted cord. Its head dress has three Royston cabochons Turquoise and so do its two eyes and the belly (measures 5/8 by 1/2 inch). It is signed \"HL\". It stands 3 inches tall by 1 and 6/8 inches at its headdress.
The necklace is made with 54 Kingman SpiderwebTurquoise nuggets with awesome detailed black matrix, 20 bench made Navajo sterling silver pearl beads, and beautiful purple oyster shell heishi. It has a traditional hook and eye sterling clasp.
It measures 23 inches and it weights a hefty 85 grams.
