Nasty Tales#4 is the first issue thataddresses the obscenity bust that took place in June, 1971 when the policeseized 275 copies ofNasty Tales#1 from the editorial office. Theinside front cover of this issue asks for reader donations to the legal defensefund, explaining that \"these legal run-ins with the piggies cost lots andlots of money.\"

This issue is once again dominated by reprints of American underground comics,which comprise the first 20+ pages of the book. These include a fine story fromRobert Crumb about Mr. Natural and his fawning disciples, Gilbert Shelton\'s\"The Freak Brothers Go To College\" from 1969, and a chapter of SpainRodriguez\'s \"Trashman Meets the Fighting She Devils.\" British comicsinclude an installment of Ogoth and Ugly Boot (\"Ogoth and the SkyWomen\") and a few pages of Edward Barker one-pagers.

While living in Greenwich Village in the sixties I knew of a little store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics. Every Friday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest version just hitting the shelves, from Wilson, Griffin, Moscoso, Williams, Shelton or Crumb. With several of my hippy friends grooving, and laughing over Mr. Natural, Yellow Dog or the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, we’d sit around that smoke filled room, sometimes late into the night.

Fast forward, some fifty years later – my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in the back of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds of underground comics that had only been read once, were in beautiful condition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold.

We wrote to dozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory. They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions: Zap Comix, Young Lust, Weirdo, Snatch, Slow Death, Rip Off Comix, Hup, Fantagor, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Cherry Poptart, Bizarre Sex, Arcade Comic Revue, just to name a few. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless.

Now we offer them on and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our more than reasonable prices.
