FANTASTIC, LEATHER BOUND AUTOGRAPH BOOK WITH SEVERAL SIGNATURES OF NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS, 1885. This exceedingly scarce, nineteenth century autograph album has autograph/signatures from Native American Indians who were in one of the traveling medicine shows which flourished at the end of the nineteenth century. Although companies played New York, Boston, and Chicago with considerable success, the natural home of the medicine show was a village square of a small town and the showman\'s favorite audience a crowd of eager town folks. Business was good: for many rural Americans the medicine shows provided the only taste of professional entertainment from one year to the next, and medicine showmen were not slow to capitalize on the possibilities. Small independent troupes and lone pitchmen vied for audiences with companies sent out by such titans of the patent medicine industry as the Hamlin Company of Chicago, makers of Wizard Oil, and the Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company of New Haven. Perhaps the most popular shows were produced by the Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company, makers of a patent cure-all called Sagwa. These companies often had a \"Dr\" on board, pantomime, a ventriloquist, as Punch and Judy shows were very popular, and they hawked their cures to the spectators.Autographs and signatures of those traveling with the medicine show include; \"Dr. Mathias Gebler - Indian Camp Sagwa; Laughing Water from Dakota, age 19 years; Major C. Newell - Lakota, with his salutation written in the Lakota language; This may be the same Major C. Newell who was an Indian Agent in 1884; William Sayers of Red Lake Minnesota. Dated at Beverly, New Jersey, May 28th, 1885. (Red Lake is a Chippewa Indian Reservation); Your friend Arcadia; Professor John D. Henderson. Ventriloquist of Punch & Judy. Called Johnny Ha, Ha, He. Red Head,\" etc. This autograph album belonged to Mamie, of Beverly, New Jersey. Several of her friends have also signed; Lewis Barker, Julia Daniels, Ida Lanne, Katie R. Swift, Maggie Bowers of Edgewater Park, NJ, R. M. McKenna from New York City, H. C. Lindemuth, of 1013 North Front street, Philadelphia. (Perhaps the son of Methodist Episcopal Rev. Jerome Lindemuth at the same address in Philadelphia), your cousin Emma Smith, Grover Cleveland, etc., and these dates range from 1884-1886.Condition: Fully leather bound autograph album with ornate gilt decoration on front cover and spine, is in very good condition internally fresh and tight and a very worthy acquisition indeed.
