This is an outstanding, full featured, working, hard to find, animated, musical figural cuckooclock thatwas producedin the Black Forest of Germany about 45 years ago. It isabsolutely gorgeous and one of the most unique ever produced. This clock is carved from cured and agedLinden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes oftheBlack Forest. It has a deep mahogany finish and deeply carved trim; very nice! The front of the case is adorned with five, large, fancy wooden grape leaves and another is found on the wooden pendulum. There is a beautifully carved wooden bird on either side of the dial staring upward at an equally impressive large wooden bird atop the clock and looking as though he\'s ready to take flight. There is awooden scalloped balcony above the dial and a rotating dance platform is mounted just above it with four colorful dance couples mounted on the platform. Thedialhas a dark brown background and features large, raised white Romannumerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out thetime. There is a wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. The door easily removes toallow access to the all metal, weight driven movement created by Regula. A weight driven movement simply means that thechains need tobe pulled occasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo, animation, and music. Regula makes the best movements and most high end clock makers use this movement in their fine clocks. The bellowtubes are intact and the topslook and sound good too! At thebottom of eachhour,acolorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial near the top and stands in the doorway.The bird gives offa single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside thecase. When he\'s through, thebird returns to the safeconfinesof the clock,closing the door behind him. And then the dance floor begins to move and the dancers spin about while a high quality \"Swiss Cuendet\" music box plays a very nice rendition of \"Blaue Donau Walzer,\" (The Blue Danube Waltz) one of the most recognized tunes ever created. When the music stops, so do the dancers. Then, at the topof each hour, the bird appears again and correctly cuckoos/chimes the currentnumber of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door.When the bird is safely back inside, the dance platform begins to turn once again and the dancers spin about and this time the music is a heavenly rendition of the \"Die Fledermaus Walzer,\" (Fledermaus Waltz) one of my favorite tunes. When the music is finished, the dancers stop and await the next half hour to continue their dance; fascinating! There is an intact label on the left side identifying the song titles, Swiss origin, and Cuendet manufacture. I\'ve looked the clock over fairly well and note it only shows minimal wear. I did find an old repair on the very top; hard to see but it\'s there. It is still a very nice clock and gorgeous on display! The clock isvery impressive and equally so in size too measuringabout14 1/2\" high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6 1/2\" or so at its deepest point, and about 10\" across the top.The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it should, and the music isvery nice too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don\'t know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, someadjustments orservicemaybe necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We oftenrecommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocksserviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classicclock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes completeas shown with three sets of attachedmetal chains, acarvedgrape leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metalweights. This clock is in a class all by itselfand is certain to bethefocal point of any collection.
