This is a wonderful find of a very old, working, well maintained 8 day cuckoo clock that was created in the Black Forest of \"Germany\" about 70 years ago, shortly after WWII. It is one of the earliest 8 day clocks I\'ve encountered and was exported by the European-American Trading Company and marketed under their trade name, \"Euramca.\" Actually, Euramca did a great deal to popularize the cuckoo clock throughout the world since they were quick to mobilize shortly after the end of WWII. They worked with struggling German craftsmen desiring to get their high quality clocks on the market at a time when it was difficult for their country to rebuild. This clock is a beautiful,well made, large, working 8 day cuckoo clock that is carved of cured and aged Linden woodthat is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the BlackForest.The caseisadorned with five large, carved woodgrape leaves on the front thatare exceptional, deep, intricate, andwavy. There is another carved wooden grape leaf on the wooden pendulum. The carvings have an original mahogany finish which trulyaccents the entire clock appearance. The dial is wooden, has a black backdrop, andfeatures white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. There is a removable wooden door on either side of the case and each are secured with a wooden latch. The door removes easily to allow accessto thefront partsof the movement to make adjustments if they shouldever become necessary. The clock has a fitted wood back and latchessecurely yet removes easily to allow access to the weightdriven, mechanical movement inside the case produced by \"Regula\'\' and bearing the Euramca Trading Company name. A weight driven movementsimply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind theclock and cuckoo activity. Regula makes the best movements and this is one of their first 8 day movements. Most German craftsmen used this movement in their high end clocks. The tall wooden bellow tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour,a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nicesounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour andcorrectly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to thesafe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! This clock has another feature you no longer find in cuckoo clocks. There is a braided cord with a brass ring on the end protruding from the bottom of the case. When pulled, the cuckoo door opens and the bird pops out so you can show him off to friends; really cool! The clock works quite wellhere, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should. It is an old clock and we don\'t know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Because of shipping, someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its newhome even though it\'s been working in my office all week. Nonetheless, we always recommend to our clock customers to service their antiqueor vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preservea great clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, acarved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and twovery heavy pinecone shaped metalweights. I\'ve looked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any damage, repairs,or missing pieces. It does show some average wear and a tiny nick here and there but nothing detracting from this gorgeous work of art. It is a veryimpressive old clockandequally so in sizetoo measuring about15\" or so high (notcounting the weights or pendulum), about 7\" at its deepest point, and about 11\" across the top. Thisclock is just stunning and a great nostalgic look back at the greatness ofBlack Forest workmanship.
