This is a gorgeous, hand carved cuckooclock that was created in the Black Forest about 45 years ago in what was then, \"West Germany.\" The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown almost exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It is the ideal size too measuring about 11 1/2\" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6\" deep, and about 9\" at its widest point. There are five, deeply hand carved grape leaves adorning the front of the case with another grape leaf found on the wooden pendulum. There is a large hand carved wooden bird atop the clock looking as though he\'s ready to take flight. The clock is quite impressive and has a beautiful dark walnut finish with only average wear. The dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read, raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy, matching hands to point out thetime. The name, \"West Germany\" appears in small block letters at the bottom of the dial. The clock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. The dooreasily removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement inside the case. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need tobe pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too! Atthe bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dialand stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside theclock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of eachhour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreatingto the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock worksquite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should. It is an oldclock and we don\'t know the service history though the movement looks to have been serviced through the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives atits new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service theirantique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so willpreserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. Theclock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a woodengrape leaf pendulum, and two rather heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.I\'ve looked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any missingpieces, repairs, damage, and only average signs of wear. It has a very nice patina and is gorgeous on display! It is an impressive old clock and an excellent example of the greatness of Black Forestworkmanship.
