NICE ORIGINAL 1863 CIVIL WAR EMERSON & SILVER MUSICIAN STYLE SWORD w/ SCABBARD:
$350.00

Up for offer is a great 1863 U.S. Civil War musician style sword/saber with original leather scabbard. The sword (including the scabbard) measures approximately 35 inches long by 4 ½ inches wide across the widest point of the handle. The sword is stamped at the end of the blade (near the handle) with “Emerson / & / Silver / Trenton / NJ” and “U.S. / DFM / 1863”. Overall the sword is in good condition. The blade itself shows moderate to heavy black colored tarnishing and surface discoloration throughout. This could likely be cleaned off with some effort if desired, but I would not recommend it. The blade is generally dirty throughout and could use a very light cleaning. There are some minor nicks along the edge of the blade in various places. The tip of the blade shows heavier black discoloration and some surface wave pattern/rippling marks. The handle appears to be made of brass. It is also stamped with the DFM inspector mark on the edge. The handle shows general moderate wear throughout, including moderate surface scratching, scuffing and wear throughout. There are some spots of heavier and deeper scratching in various places on the handle. The scabbard is made of leather and is correct period and style for the sword. The end of the scabbard is marked with the inspection mark ADK, indicating that the scabbard is not original to the sword. The scabbard is made of leather, which I imagine is much scarcer than the metal scabbards because of its fragility. The brass ends on the scabbard are overall in good condition with moderate surface scratching, scuffing and wear throughout. There appears to be a solder repair at the tip of the scabbard. The brass end on the other side of the scabbard (towards the handle of the sword) is moderately loose and will need to be resecured. There is a small dent on the top brass piece that is approximately half an inch long. The leather on the center portion of the scabbard shows heavy surface cracking, wear, scratching and scuffing throughout. There are some spots of flaking, cracking and splitting to the leather along the center seam in various places. There appears to be a repair to the leather towards the end of the center portion near the brass end. This repair appears to be very old, possibly done when the sword was in military service. See pictures for a better idea of condition.
