Stores Be sure to add me to your favourites list!A very good example of Frederick Alexcee 1853 - 1940 , Tsimshian/ Canadian carving of feast spoon with a bird on handle. This piece is 17 inches long by 3 inches wide and has good colour and patination. There is damage to the bowl and what looks like a knot has fallen out at top of bowl still could be fixed. Please view my pictures and ask questions.
Frederick Alexcee 1853 - 1940
was born in Lax K w`alaams, then known as Fort Simpson, in 1853. His father was an Iroquois laborer from Eastern Canada, employed by the Hudson`s BayCompanyat Fort Simpson,. His mother was Tsimshian from the Gilutsàaw tribe, one of the Nine Tribes from the lower Skeena River area based at Lax Kwàlaams. In the matrilineal system of the Tsimshian, Alexcee followed his mother as a Gilutsàaw and a member of the Gispwudwada (Killerwhale clan or phratry). His Tsimishian name was Wiiksmwan, meaning Great Deer Woman.
Alexcee was trained as a halaayt carver, the term halaayt referring to shamanic practices which were theprerogativeof chiefs. He pruduced naxnox (spirit) paraphernalia anditemsforuse in secret society`ceremonies. All of these were practices which late 19th century missionaries in Lax Kwàlaams wereendeavouringtoeradicate. Alexcee alsocarvedfor the Indiancuriotrade and produced paintings anddrawingsdepicting traditional life in Port Simpson.
