This \"Nuchu\" also called a \"Uchu\" (Nuchugana is plural, it is at least 65 years old, collected by myself; it is in excellent condition. This nuchu is of a Kuna medicine man sitting in chair. I collected this nuchu in the mid-1970\'s and it was sold with many other Kuna items to the Bowers Museum in S. Calif, recently the museum deaccessioned this pair of nuchus from their collection and I was given the opportunity to purchase the pair back.* Please note they are being sold individually. The museum collection numbers are still on the bottom of figures, and this one is the male figure and I believe it to be slightly older. Despite first impressions, they are carved by different Innatuledi (medicine men) The female figure was carved by a Nele (seer) which can be a man or woman and they are carved from two different kinds of sacred trees, giving them unique powers. The Kuna believe that the nuchu receives its power from the spirit of the tree; trees that are from which it was carved. This tree spirit gives the nuchu its power to go into the underworld to bring back a person\'s spirit back from the evil that has taken it below to the underworld thus causing the illness. These medicinal dolls are protective guardian spirits to protect against the evil spirits that attack a person and cause sickness. They are good \"magic.\"
This Nuchu was made by a medicine men, Ina Tuledi or Inntuledi, and was used numerable times in healing rituals. Used in capturing a benevolent spirit (bad spirit causing the illness) by the medicine man. The medicine man, is summoned in the healing process, for communicating with the spirits and for soul retrieval, restoring the balance of health to the ill individual. The Ina Tuledi,(shaman medicine man) will carve the Nuchu from sacred trees and will sing, infusing the Nuchu with a tutelary spirit, a \"purba\" soul. ~Prudence (Heffron) Grissom

This authentic Nuchu, is in excellent condition, and is an artifact of the finest museumquality. The rarity of these pieces makes them priceless in regards to setting a value. This male nuchu sitting on a Kuna stool is 8 3/4 inches in height.PLEASE email me with any questions, I\'m always happy to hear from you!
In the photos you will see pages from the book and museum exhibit \"The Art of Being Kuna\" curator Mari Lynn Salvador. All of the Nuchus shown and that were in the exhibit, were collected by myself in the years 1980-1992, and were purchased from me for the themuseum from abenefactor\'s gift for the exhibit, \"The Art of Being Kuna.\"
PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHOTOS AS THEY SAY MUCH MORE THAN MY WORDS EVER COULD SAY! AND PLEASE email me, I\'m more than happy to answer you! I could say much more about Nuchus, but because of the format have kept it brief, again, please email me if you have any questions.Thank you! Prudence ~LUCKYTREEHOUSE
